Sony revealed the PS4 and PS5 games that will be available to subscribers via PlayStation Plus Essential starting from April 1, 2025. Three more games will be up for grabs, including one from the Digimon series. Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth - Hacker’s Memory is one of the best games in the series, and it is a mix of visual novel and JRPG. It is also a completely standalone game from Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth, meaning that you don’t need to have played that game to enjoy Hacker’s Memory.

Two other games are ing Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth - Hacker’s Memory this month, and they are available to all PlayStation Plus subscribers regardless of their tier. Here are the three games coming to PlayStation Plus Essential in April:

• RoboCop: Rogue City (PS5 only)
• The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (PS4, PS5)
• Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth - Hacker’s Memory (PS4, PS5)

The following games will be leaving PS Plus Essential on March 31, 2025. If you have Essential and claimed them before they are removed, then you can them to play after the deadline as long as your subscription is active.

Sony began its annual Spring Sale on the PlayStation Store, which includes discounts of up to 80% off both PS5 and PS4 games starting on March 26, 2025. You can grab smaller discounts on some recent releases, and much deeper discounts on older classics.

Yoasobi ed its new song “Players,” which appeared in a commercial to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the PlayStation. Usada Pekora of Hololive also appeared as one of the trio of characters in said commercial.

The video starts with the three characters holding up a PlayStation memory card bearing the anniversary logo, only for it to suck them into a fantasy world. After the train transforms into something more reminiscent of a flying centipede, they jump out of it while the “Play has no limits” catchphrase appears. You can watch the commercial with the “Players” song via the official Yoasobi or PlayStation social media channels, as well as here:

As mentioned earlier, Usada Pekora, a hololive VTuber, appears in the PlayStation Yoasobi commercial. She also provides the voice acting. The others with her are Nanase Nishino (an actress, television host, and former Nogizaka46 idol) and Kiyo (a Japanese YouTuber with over 5.19 million subscribers as of the time of writing. Animator and illustrator, Kenichi Yoshida, designed the characters for this commercial. He previously worked on shows and films such as Eureka Seven, Gundam Reconguista in G, and Princess Mononoke.

Sony commissioning Yoasobi to write “Players” for its PlayStation commercial is only the latest of high-profile collaborations with the band. Just earlier this year, Yoasobi’s “Gunjou” appeared in McDonald’s Japan’s Tirori Mix for 2025. They also wrote and performed the NHK Sports theme song back in 2024.

Bandai Lifestyle will release an acrylic logo display of the PlayStation logo for the console’s 30th anniversary. Aside from decorating your room, the display can also play the original PlayStation’s start-up sound at the press of a button.

You can pre-order the PlayStation acrylic logo display via Bandai. However, you need to be in Japan to even access the webpage. It costs 3300 JPY ($22.15) and pre-orders for the display will close on April 20, 2025. It’ll ship out in July 2025. However, Bandai will only deliver within Japan. So those living outside the country will need to use a proxy service.

This acrylic logo display is the first from the new Sounds line, which will combine decoration with sound. When you purchase this, you’ll get the acrylic PlayStation logo and the stand to display it on. The sound of the start-up noise is actually coming from said stand.

The original PlayStation console came out in December 1994. Through 2024 and now 2025, Sony and other brands have released lots of commemorative items to celebrate its 30th years. For example, in January 2025, Grapht released goods including keychains of popular games from each PlayStation generation. Takarajima will also release a bag resembling the original PlayStation with the May 2025 issue of its smart magazine.

March’s PS Plus Extra and PS Plus games have been announced, and the tier includes a classic PS1 trilogy. Armored Core, its prequel Project Phantasma, and Phantasma’s sequel, Master of Arena, will all be added to the most expensive tier of the service this month.

In total there are 12 games that will be added to PS Plus Extra and PS Plus this month, with all 12 available on PS5, and ten of them playable on PS4. One of the highlights of the month is Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, which is a standout metroidvania from last year.

Here are all eight games that will be available via PS Plus Extra from March 18, 2025:

Sony has announced that sign ups for the PlayStation beta program are now open. The information came through an official PlayStation blog post from Senior Director at Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications Sid Shuman However, consumers will need to meet a handful of requirements in order to participate.

Consumers with a PlayStation Network can sign up through a dedicate website. Participating in the beta program will allow for consumers to playtest games on their PlayStation 5 and PC. This will also extend to new console features PlayStation will roll out, which includes the PlayStation App for mobile devices.

The requirements in order to participate in the beta program are as follows:

• Players must have a valid for PlayStation Network in good standing with a current email address. s with restrictions or violations may not be eligible for participation.
• Players must live in the region where Beta Program at PlayStation is available.
• Players must meet the legal age requirement for their region.

In November 2024, Sony announced that PlayStation Portal would cloud gaming. PlayStation Portal is a service that allows for consumers to experience a “console-quality gaming experience on a handheld device," according to Sony. The service is still in beta.

Consumers can immediately sign up for the PlayStation beta program, and is available to s globally.

Sony Interactive Entertainment shared a new PlayStation Lineup music video highlighting 15 highly anticipated games coming to the PS5, alongside a few that have already released. The song accompanying the footage is titled “Chiisana Heya Kara (From a Small Room)” and is performed by singer Akari Nanawo.

The video is inspired by the theme of visiting vast video game worlds starting from a small room. The games featured showcase brief glimpses of gameplay footage as seen in previously released trailers. Additionally, 11 different artists worked on the illustrations for the small rooms that work as transitions between game clips.

Sony is currently looking for part-time QA game testers as well as QA localization testers for PlayStation Studios in Japan. The company will hire new part-time employees in two batches, with deadlines on February 3 and March 3, 2025.

Those hired among the current batch of applicants will start working on March 3, with people hired during the last batch starting on April 1, 2025. In addition to the aforementioned QA game tester and QA Japanese localization tester, PlayStation Studios is also accepting applications for QA game tester with reduced hours, and Linguistic Quality Assurance Coordinator.

QA game testers will be tasked with playing PlayStation Studios games and compiling reports on any possible flaws or errors found, by following a checklist. This position focuses on games made in Japan, and the listing notes titles such as Gran Turismo, Death Stranding, and Astro's Playroom as examples of games tested in the past.

Meanwhile, the QA Japanese localization testers will check the localized elements present in PlayStation Studios games to see if they match the setting of its original versions, and report in case of any discrepancies between the original game and its localized version. Some examples of games previously covered in this position include God of War, The Last of Use, Marvel's Spider-Man, and the Horizon series, among others.

For the 30th anniversary of the PlayStation, Sony and Grapht have released merchandise featuring the original console and Sony exclusive titles. Village Vanguard is offering them in advance, though you will need to reside in Japan or employ a third-party proxy service to get them if you live outside the country.

The 30th anniversary PlayStation merchandise includes acrylic keychains, baseball hats, and a tote bag that looks like the original PlayStation console. For the keychains, you can choose to get ones resembling a memory card, a console, or a controller. Meanwhile, the baseball caps have the signature four PlayStation buttons (the triangle, circle, X, and square) on them.

As for keychains featuring Sony exclusive games, they come in a blind box. To complete the collection, you’ll need to get all eight different titles. The keychains all use the PlayStation Retro IP Jewel Case artwork. As for the games, you can get:

The PlayStation Partner Awards 2024 Japan & Asia will be held on December 3, 2024, and awards will include a new category to celebrate 30 years of the release of the original PlayStation games. Sony Interactive Entertainment also announced that voting is now available until November 7, 2024 from the PlayStation Partner Awards 2024 official website.

As part of the new “PlayStation Generations Awards” prize category for the PlayStation Partner Awards 2024, s can vote for their favorite games in each PlayStation console released for the past 30 years. This includes the original PlayStation, as well as the PS2, PSP, PS3, PS Vita, and PS4.

As for the standard categories, the top three titles developed in Japan and other Asian countries will receive the Grand Award, and the top title will receive the Partner Award. Additionally, the Excellence Award will be given to titles that have received the Grand Award in three consecutive years, in recognition of the achievement.

Furthermore, the Special Award will be given to titles that have achieved noteworthy accomplishments. The "s' Choice Awards" will be given to the top five new titles released during 2024, selected by voting, out of the top 30 most-played titles in Japan and other Asian countries.

The PlayStation Partner Awards started as the PlayStation Awards in 1994, the year the original PlayStation console released, as a way to celebrate the creators and game developers that worked on titles for the console.

The voting period for the PlayStation Partner Awards 2024 is now open until November 7, 2024, and the winners will be announced on December 3, 2024.

Japan will receive a Monster Hunter Wilds PS5 cover and controller to celebrate the release of the next installment in Capcom's behemoth of a series. Pre-orders for both items will open on October 30, 2024 and will be in limited supply. Unfortunately, both the controller and cover are exclusive to Japan. The Monster Hunter Wilds controller will cost 12,480 yen or roughly $81, where was the case will cost 9,980 yen or $65. The controller and case will release on February 28, 2025.

Of course, neither the controller or case will come with Monster Hunter Wilds. You'll have to purchase the game separately. You can take a look at the controller and case below.

The Monster Hunter Wilds controller features the logo from the game and is extenuated by floral embellishments on the handles. Additionally, you can see the "Quest Completed!" icon on the upper lefthand corner. The case includes the same detailing, but with red and white details. The controller comes in red, while the case comes in black.

A Monster Hunter Wilds open beta test is set to take place on October 31, 2024 for PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X. It will allow for crossplay and will remain open until November 3, 2024.

Monster Hunter Wilds will come out on February 28, 2025 for the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam.

Even more video game music is coming to concert halls across the globe. Sony Entertainment announced that the PlayStation Concert World Tour will take place in 2025, and include songs from their expansive catalogue of games. PlayStation Concert World Tour tickets will be available to purchase on October 16, 2024 at 7AM PT/10AM ET/4PM CET.

In a PlayStation blog post by Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications, stated that the concert series is a t venture between Sony Interactive Entertainment, RoadCo. Entertainment, and GEA Live, the latter being a company who's projects include live concert performances alongside films like Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse. The key entries of the concert series will be music from the Horizon series, The Last of Us, Ghost of Tsushima, and the most recent God of War entries, alongside entries from other parts of PlayStation's 30 year history of games.

The concert series is kicking off the global tour in Europe, beginning in Dublin, Ireland on April 19, 2025. The current open dates for the tour are only for Europe and the United Kingdom, but Shuman states the the tour will be headed to more than 200 cities across the world. Starting in Dublin, Ireland, this first run will head from Ireland to Glasgow, London, Brimingham, Manchester, Leeds, and Newcastle in the UK, into Amsterdam, Netherlands, Paris and Amnéville, , Brussels, Belgium, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Berlin, Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Leipzig, Munich, Oberhausen, , Zurich, Switzerland, Bologna, Italy, Budapest, Hungary, Sofia, Bulgaria, Vienna, Austria, Bratislava, Slovakia, Prague, Czech Republic, Lodz, Poland, Copenhagen, Denmark, Gotenburg, Sweden, and, finally, Oslo, Norway for the European leg.

It's hard to imagine what the history of JRPGs would look like without the contributions of Square Enix. Once two powerful rivals, Square and Enix's library reads like a who's who of the genre. It would be very difficult to overstate the impact of Final Fantasy VII on the JRPG genre. This flashy, ambitious PlayStation debut for the Final Fantasy series proved to be one of the key titles for helping this genre break out in the global market. Setting all of that aside, it's also a very good game. With a compelling setting, memorable characters, and a story that will keep you guessing to the end, it's not hard to see why Final Fantasy VII would lead a list of the best retro Square Enix JRPGs.

Chrono Trigger isn't just one of the best retro Square Enix JRPGs, it's also one of the best JRPGs of all-time. Some of the biggest names in the business came together to make this game, resulting in an absolute masterpiece. Terrific graphics, a spectacular soundtrack, and a blazing pace are just some of the reasons that this Super NES title has stood the test of time and served as the inspiration for countless other JRPGs. An essential game to play for anyone interested in the genre.

The PlayStation played host to some of the most interesting, innovative JRPGs ever. Valkyrie Profile saw Square Enix and developer tri-Ace come together to create an intriguing mix of side-scrolling platforming and speedy turn-based combat. This is all wedded to a fascinating story about a Valkyrie named Lenneth and the fallen heroes she recruits to her cause. Reaching the best ending can be a challenge, but it's a worthy test that rewards you with even more story.

The SaGa series marches to its own beat, and that was obvious even as early as this Super Famicom installment. Romancing SaGa III has a lot of the usual SaGa elements. There are eight characters to choose from, character growth that is based on your actions as opposed to gathering experience points, and many opaque systems to experiment with. In of presentation, this is among Square's finest 16-bit releases. It's a hard game, but satisfying.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride 6j11b

In many ways, Dragon Quest V is a special game in the Dragon Quest series. In Japan, its unique story helped make it one of the most cherished games of all-time. This was, however, the first mainline game in the series to miss out on a localization. It wasn't until the Nintendo DS remake that players outside of Japan could see what the fuss was all about. Dragon Quest V follows the story one of one person's life, from childhood to parenthood, and it's that distinctive set-up that helps make it one of the best retro Square Enix JRPGs.

Tokyo Game Show 2024 is one of the most exciting times for any player, especially those who love Japanese titles. There have been a ton of announcements during TGS, including for every platform from Switch to PlayStation to even Xbox. Here are the best TGS 2024 announcements that have impressed us the most and everyone should know about.

All the Best TGS 2024 Announcements: Ghost of Yotei 15v59

The standout announcement happened just before the start of Tokyo Game Show 2024. During the latest PlayStation State of Play, the grand finale announcement was a Ghost of Tsushima sequel known as Ghost of Yotei. The new location, set in northern Japan, and female protagonist are all thrilling.

Better yet, the open-world sequel looks to continue the stunning, colorful aesthetic of the original, but with the power of PS5 and PS5 Pro. And if that isn’t enough, the game is coming out sooner than you might expect. Ghost of Yotei releases next year sometime in 2025.

Level-5 hosted its own event in celebration of Tokyo Game Show 2024. The event included new details on previously announced games like Professor Layton and the New World of Steam, DecaPolice, and Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time. But the real surprise was Holy Horror Mansion, which appears to be the next evolution of the Yokai Watch series.

The same colorful style from Yokai Watch returns alongside a slightly spookier style. That said, Holy Horror Mansion looks to still be an all-ages RPG, but the story seems to have a significant focus. We will find out more info about this RPG in Spring 2025.

Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster on Xbox 4166z

Even Xbox fans had something to look forward to during TGS 2024 with one of the best announcements happening during the Xbox presentation. There were quite a few notable announcements here, including a new trailer for Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater and both Starcraft games coming to Game . However, our favorite has to be the arrival of all six Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster games immediately on Xbox alongside other missing Square Enix titles.

Still no exact release date just yet for the first major post-launch patch for FFXIV Dawntrail, but we now know 7.1 is coming sometime mid-November 2024 courtesy of the TGS 2024 Letter from the Producer 83. In addition, we now know it will be called “Crossroads” and include a bunch of new content for players to enjoy like the first Final Fantasy XI Alliance Raid, a new dungeon to complete, Pelupelu Allied Society quests, and so much more.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach Release Window b75r

One of the more surprising announcements is Hideo Kojima’s reveal during TGS 2024 that Death Stranding 2 is only about 30-40% complete. Despite this alarming fact, the game is still scheduled to come out in 2025. The sequel will also feature a brand new photo mode that will allow players to dance and pose various characters throughout the world for pictures.

I have a general lack of interest and excitement for Sony's regular State of Play series of showcases going over PlayStation, in particular PS5 and PSVR 2, game announcements. They often pale in comparison to other similar presentations from competitors and, of course, the company's own signature event showcases. However, the recent Tokyo Game Show (TGS 2024) State of Play is the exception, as I believe it is the best one yet.

The core of what makes this TGS 2024 State of Play the best one so far is two-fold. The first is that Sony offered a little bit of something for almost everyone. It felt like a mini-PlayStation Showcase. The State of Play kicked off with a solid intro, revealing free DLC coming to Astro Bot. This is a smooth way to remind players of one of the recent Game of the Year contenders and show some love to those who already beat it.

From there, the State of Play had the right mix of brand new announcements and updates for existing games. New information about and gameplay details for games like Dragon Age: The Veilguard and PS5 version of Palworld were welcome announcements. Then there are reveals of intriguing games like Hell Is Us, the stunning The Midnight Walk, and surprisingly fascinating ArcheAge Chronicles.

If that isn’t enough, we got release dates for titles like Fantasian Neo Dimension, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, and Dynasty Warriors: Origins. If you are a PSVR 2 owner, this State of Play even justified owning the VR headset a bit more. There were significant and welcome announcements of games like Metro Awakening and Hitman: World of Assassination too.

That is all before including the two showstopper headliners. Monster Hunter Wilds looked fantastic yet again in its latest trailer. Fortunately, this State of Play revealed the release date, which is quite soon. But above all else, there is Ghost of Yotei. The final announcement came out of nowhere and was a shocking surprise. Ghost of Tsushima still remains the most stunning game I’ve ever played, and Ghost of Yotei looks to follow up on its predecessor.

No matter what, there was something for everyone in this TGS 2024 State of Play. If you like JRPGs, there’s that. If you like VR, there were some solid options. And if you are looking forward to biggest blockbuster third and first-party hits, that was also here. Sure, not every game appeals to everyone. In fact, only really two new game announcements were for me personally: Ghost of Yotei and Lunar Remastered Collection.

However, the spectacle of the presentation and general lineup all worked so well. Even the games I didn’t care too much about stood out with well-executed trailers. This State of Play is the first of its kind to remind me of the good old days of attending Sony Press Conferences at E3. Plus, it helps that this State of Play was far more interesting and better balanced than any to date.

That said, the competition wasn’t that impressive. The best State of Play before this one, in my opinion, was held in May 2019. It had the right mix of new announcements and re-reveals. The headliners were games like Final Fantasy VII Remake, MediEvil, and Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. Again, all staples that appealed to everyone. Even that particular State of Play wasn’t that substantial or long. And to make matters worse, most of the State of Plays since then have been significantly worse.

Fortunately, this most recent TGS 2024 State of Play changed all that. It feels like a mini-PlayStation Showcase with something for just about everyone. I just hope Sony is able to keep up this level of quality and announcements with the next one.
