The Nintendo Switch is near the very top of the best-selling video game consoles of all time. However, that doesn’t mean the hybrid console is perfect. There are some notable features it’s missing, especially in the multimedia department. The Nintendo Switch 2 has the chance to fix these issues with streaming apps like Crunchyroll and Netflix at launch.

As of right now, the bulk of the streaming apps on the original Switch include Hulu, YouTube, Crunchyroll, and Twitch. That is a pretty decent selection with plenty of material to check out. Except the problem is most of these apps weren’t available for Switch even in its first year. It took far too long for fans to be able to stream quality video content across these apps on the platform.

However, that isn’t even the main issue here. There are still notable apps missing from the Switch that will probably never come to it. This includes the likes of Netflix, Disney+, Max, Prime Video, Paramount+, and so much more. At one point, Nintendo’s own Super Mario Bros. movie was on Netflix to stream and you couldn’t even watch it on the company’s hardware.

It is even more frustrating when the likes of apps like Netflix were available on previous Nintendo systems like Wii U and even the original Wii itself. Now, the argument some would say is why does it matter in 2025 with smartphones and smart TVs so plentiful? While true, more options are always better than none. After all, no one prevented the PS5 from having Netflix just because the TV you’re connected to likely already has the app.

Convenience is always nice and not having to switch platforms constantly is a plus. The Switch 2 will possibly have a larger screen than the original, so it would be nice to be able to stream shows and movies on there. This is especially true when traveling where you can just bring your Switch and phone instead of having to bring your bulky laptop or tablet to stream on.

Then there is the benefit for families. Parents may not want to give their younger kids a phone, but they would be open to a Switch. This saves them money if apps like Disney+ and YouTube are on there, so they don’t have to also get them a tablet to stream on. In addition, having multiple kids can be helped if one child is using a Switch, another is on a tablet, and perhaps a third is using a parent’s phone.

In the end, the Nintendo Switch 2 will likely be pretty similar to its predecessor. This gives Nintendo the chance to address some key flaws of the Switch. Chief among these issues is the lack of streaming apps. Here’s hoping the Nintendo Switch 2 addresses this head on and quickly. I hope to see apps like Netflix and Crunchyroll on the Nintendo Switch 2 at launch.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to be announced and launch sometime in 2025.

The standard edition’s regular price of 8,778 yen (around $60) will be reduced to 6,144 yen (about $42), while the Monarch Edition will drop from 13,178 yen (around $90) to 9,224 yen (about $63)

In related news, back in March 2024, Unicorn Overlord physical copies sold out at retail stores in Japan shortly after its release. Atlus apologized for the unexpected shortage, attributing it to high demand, and encouraged fans to consider digital versions or place reservations for restocks.

Unicorn Overlord is readily available to play on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X.

When it comes to picking a Nintendo Switch to buy today, it can be a bit confusing and overwhelming with all the different models. There’s the OLED, original Switch, updated Switch model, and Lite. And those aren’t even including the different color variations and bundles. But to simplify for you, here is the best Nintendo Switch model you should buy.

Mario Red Nintendo OLED Switch Model Announced Release Date

Best Overall Nintendo Switch Model: OLED 5v3l57

The overall best Nintendo Switch model is the OLED version. This is essentially the standard for the Nintendo Switch these days. It has a slightly larger screen, with the most up-to-date performance, and above all else, that gorgeous OLED screen. It is no secret that the Switch is behind its console competitors in of visuals.

However, there is a significant difference when using the OLED model. Even games with lower resolutions and less detailed graphics look impressively better with this screen. Though most of these differences are only noticeable in handheld mode, this is the way to go for new Switch owners these days until its successor releases.

Honorable Mention: Switch Lite 11ld

While the OLED model is the best overall Switch version, it is a bit pricey. If you don’t happen to have the cash to shell out for that one, the honorable mention and runner-up in my opinion is the Switch Lite. This device is handheld-only, but if you like playing in portable mode most of the time, this is the one for you.

The Switch Lite has excellent form factor, being adorably smaller than the other versions. It is compact, comes in some cute colors I wish the regular Switch had, and can still play almost every game in the library. While you sacrifice TV mode and removable Joy-Cons, the Switch Lite is a highly recommended budget console version these days.

Nintendo Switch Famicom Controllers

Nintendo announced that the Family Computer (Famicom) controllers for the Nintendo Switch are now available to buy for everyone via the company's official Japanese store. Previously exclusive to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, these controllers can now be bought by anyone.

The Famicom Controllers, priced at ¥6,578 (approximately $42 USD) each, are designed to replicate the classic feel of playing on the original Family Computer system on the Switch. They can be attached to the Nintendo Switch console for charging, much like the standard Joy-Con controllers. However, due to their limited button layout, Nintendo noted that the controllers are only compatible with the games in the Famicom Nintendo Switch Online app and Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition.

Customers can purchase up to four controllers per person. The expected delivery date is typically between two to six days after ordering, excluding some isolated islands. The store only ships to people in Japan.

Nintendo hasn't made any worldwide announcements as of yet regarding whether or not this change could be made globally. The US website for the Nintendo Switch Online service still shows the NES Switch controllers as an offer for subscribers. That set normally costs $59.99.

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition is available on the Nintendo Switch worldwide.

Screenshot of Swordfighter Peach in Princess Peach: Showtime!

Princess Peach: Showtime is a fun, action-packed Super Mario spin-off that makes you realize you don’t always need Mario to save the day or have a good time. With beautiful level design and a whole bunch of transformations and combat mechanics, the 2024 Nintendo Switch title will likely be loved by Super Mario World fans looking for something to fill the void while they wait for a new installment. It’s my favorite Super Mario spin-off to date. While some may be skeptical of a Princess Peach-led game, especially with it being 19 years since Super Princess Peach on the Nintendo DS, you definitely shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. The Mushroom Kingdom princess stands on her own here.

In Princess Peach: Showtime, your aim is to save Sparkle Theatre from an evil masked villain known as Grape and her annoying crew, the Sour Bunch. They’ve kidnapped the Theets, a troupe of actors who reside in the theatre, and it’s up to Peach and Stella -- the Sparkle Theatre’s ribbon guardian -- to rescue them and restore order by jumping into various plays and acting them out. Each play has its own storyline and theme, which made me want to clear them to find out what happens. As you do, you’ll unlock a variety of costumes for Peach, who uses Stella to attack, each with its own power and play style, such as Ninja Peach, where you take out enemies with a kunai and scale walls with lightning speed and Dashing Thief Peach, which gives her a grappling hook with a cool costume to boot.

Not every costume has combat mechanics, though. One play dresses the princess as Patissiere Peach, who must bake and decorate cookies against the clock, Cooking Mama style. This was my favorite, even though the levels can get tough due to the speed at which you must help out the Theets with their desserts. But that only made it more fun! You get to use each costume multiple times in different stages, too, so it’s not just a one-and-done deal.

Some plays have boss fights, which have various mechanics, largely involving dodging at the right time by pressing A. This was very common and appeared in many battles, which made them too easy after a while because it was just a case of figuring out when to dodge and jump on their head three times to kill them off. I would have liked to see more mechanics here, as I began to get bored whenever I found myself in a challenge against a boss. Though, luckily, they didn’t happen too often, especially after the opening hour.

As you play through Sparkle Theatre’s various plays, you collect Sparkla Gems, reminiscent of Super Mario 3D World’s Green Stars. Some are easy to miss, concealed behind a dull spotlight or off the beaten path. At times, I was convinced I’d collected all of them in a play, only to reach the end and realize I’d missed a couple, even though I was certain I’d combed through every nook and cranny. You don’t need to collect every Sparkle Gem to progress, but if you’re someone who strives to reach 100% completion on every stage, you’ll love the challenge like I did. There’s also a hidden NPC in each stage named the Ribboner, who, when found, will unlock a new Ribbon style for Peach or Stella, so it’s worth going out of your way to hunt him down.

There are many Peach and Stella Ribbons to unlock in Princess Peach: Showtime, whether it’s through the aforementioned Ribboner, defeating Action Rehearsals after clearing a floor, or buying them in the Sparkle Theatre first-floor lobby using the coins you collect throughout the plays. I swapped Peach’s outfit often because she has many cute ones, and I couldn’t decide which one I wanted to wear. Every time I liked one, I unlocked something better! This made me go out of my way to collect as many as possible, adding to the replayability of each stage. There are also other things to unlock in the lobby, especially if you collect every Sparkla Gem in a stage, but I’ll leave that surprise for you to uncover.

Princess Peach: Showtime is a fantastic action-adventure title with many transformations that make the game fun and replayable. While some may find the boss battles tedious and repetitive, it is offset by enjoyable combat and a plethora of collectibles, making it fun for those who love the grind. Overall, Princess Peach: Showtime manages to hold its own as a Super Mario spin-off and proves that Mario doesn’t need to be in every game in its universe in order for it to be great.

Princess Peach: Showtime will be available on March 22, 2024, on the Nintendo Switch.

Review: Super Mario RPG gives an underrated classic a second chance to shine

Nearly three decades after its release in 1996, the Super Mario RPG remake gives the classic a much-deserved second chance on the Nintendo Switch. The off-beat project from Square and Nintendo not only holds up with its witty humor and quirky level design, but I think people will find it's better than they .

Screenshot of Mario jumping in Super Mario RPG

When Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars originally launched on the SNES, the game's risky genre mashup was pretty mind-blowing for many players. However, some may consider it something of a hidden gem, despite being responsible for spawning other beloved role-playing series' such as Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi. The Super Mario RPG remake on the Nintendo Switch is a faithful adaptation of the cult classic while reimagining the entire game from the ground up with gorgeous high-definition graphics that breathe new life into this creative take on the side-scrolling plumber.

I first encountered Super Mario RPG when I was eight years old. While visiting my uncle's house in 1996, I accidentally stumbled across the SNES cartridge while rummaging through his room and was completely perplexed by its strange artwork. Decades later, I am shocked by how well the game's story still holds up. In particular, Super Mario RPG has a hilarious script that had me constantly bursting into laughter. One of the game's opening scenes perfectly sums this up. Mario celebrates his swift victory after defeating Bowser in battle. However, King Koopa decides that if he's going to go down, he's going to take his rival with him and cuts down his chandelier too. Both characters then burst into tears as they plummet to their peril. Super Mario RPG's snappy humor is rapid-fire at every turn in the plot, and this is the funniest the franchise has been in years.

In the game, players get to control the Nintendo mascot in turn-based combat. On the surface, the battle mechanic has the standard physical attacks, magic spells, and items. However, what surprised me is how engaging the battle system is, despite being 26 years old. Whenever you use a move against an enemy, you can double your damage if you press the attack button at the right time. However, every attack and magical spell has a unique animation, so it's not as easy as it sounds to work out the timing. You can also block all incoming damage from enemies if you press the defense button a second before your foe lands a hit on you. This system kept me engaged and on the edge of my seat throughout the game's campaign. Also, because enemy types constantly change, Super Mario RPG keeps you on your toes with the mechanics.

Screenshot of the battle system in Super Mario RPG

Combat in Super Mario RPG is incredibly fun. If you successfully time your attacks, you damage all enemies simultaneously while having a random chance of filling up your health or magic meter. Certain battles can even end with a random minigame, during which you can double your experience points or coins. In an adorable shuffle game, you must guess which egg baby Yoshi hides in as an example. These battle gimmicks create a fresh take on the traditional RPG formula, which results in combat never feeling tedious. The quirky systems also extend to the game's overworld, as hidden chests and various secret interactions are a joy to engage with. For a game made in 1996, you can tell how much love Square put into creating a unique fleshed-out world for their crossover project with Nintendo.

Super Mario RPG also strikes an interesting balance in that it's deep enough for veteran RPG players to enjoy, while not being too complicated for casual fans new to the genre. For example, the game has a pretty straightforward level-up system. After reaching enough points, you only have to choose between Physical, HP, and Magic stats. You power up your characters primarily by unlocking new armor and weapons. This split system allows you to fix your characters at any time if they become underpowered because of their stats. I also think the equipment system is more rewarding, as I was always looking forward to finding a new city or hidden chest to improve my character.

In Super Mario RPG, the Mushroom Kingdom is thrown into despair when the monstrous sword Exor crashes into Bowser's Castle. In an exciting twist, Mario is not going on another adventure to rescue Princess Peach for the millionth time. Instead, he gets to team up with Bowser, Peach, and newcomers Mallow and Geno to repair Star Road and defeat the nefarious Smithy Gang.

Screenshot of Tadpole pond in Super Mario RPG

While the plot is not deep, its vibrant cast of characters and quirky story make it one of the best Super Mario campaigns in the franchise's history. Super Mario RPG also features some of the most diverse level designs since the release of Super Mario World in 1990. Whether it is a rocky mountain town run by mole miners or a tropical pond inhabited by dancing tadpoles, every section of the campaign is packed with quirky locations.

Speaking of quirky, Super Mario RPG is also one of the weirdest games in the long-running franchise. You can feel the influence of Square on this project, as the iconic Japanese studio was not afraid to create bizarre enemy designs. While playing the remake on the Switch, I was in awe of how weird the game was willing to get. Seriously, you get to take on a top-hat-wearing dinosaur and a four-eyed cat with a long tongue. This game often feels more like a Final Fantasy game, and it's all the more interesting because of it.

Regarding accessibility, Super Mario RPG has a Breezy or Normal difficulty setting. Breezy is the game's Easy Mode, which substantially scales back its challenging battles. Players not used to RPGs can comfortably jump into the campaign with this mode without any issues. On the other hand, Normal Mode offers a pretty decent challenge, as the game has various difficulty spikes throughout the story. During my playthrough, I had to spend a few hours grinding because I hadn't leveled enough and was getting easily defeated by late-game bosses.

The only thing I would caution some players against is relying too much on the game's Easy mode. I think it's an excellent accessibility option and will allow players of all ages to engage with the role-playing game. However, I found the mode to be a bit too simple when I tried it. Thankfully, Nintendo allows you to toggle the mode on or off anytime. So, if you find yourself getting stuck on a boss or feel like the game is becoming too challenging, you can easily switch it on. But I just found that leaving Easy mode on for too long can be detrimental, as your characters become overpowered quickly and you will start to snowball enemies. So, if you specifically want a challenge, just be mindful not to leave the more accessible setting on for too long.

Super Mario RPG is also gorgeous. Although the remake carefully re-creates every pixel of the original game, Square's offbeat designs and use of vibrant colors stand out in the HD reimagining. Super Mario RPG specifically looks lovely on the Switch OLED, as its colors jump from the screen. This is particularly true during the Triple Move group attack segments in combat, which trigger a beautiful cutscene of Mario and his party coming together to create a devastating attack. Because the game meticulously re-creates the game faithfully, I feel this is a rare case where the remake is better than the original. Instead of overhauling everything to modern standards,it keeps the game's original art direction intact and is more of a restoration showcasing what the game was always meant to look like.

Review: WarioWare: Move It! is a fun party game with some motion control drawbacks

Although WarioWare: Move It is one of the strangest gaming experiences I've had in a long time, its addicting gameplay also made it one of the most enjoyable games I've played all year.

Originally launching on the GameBoy Advance over two decades ago, the minigame franchise returns for its twelfth major title on the Nintendo Switch. However, like 2006's WarioWare: Smooth Moves for the Nintendo Wii, WarioWare: Move It asks a lot from players as the game heavily leans on the motion controls of the Joy-Con controllers, which is sometimes to its detriment.

To get things out of the way, WarioWare: Move It requires players to detach their Joy-Cons from their system at all times to play the game. For those that run their console through their TV, this isn't a problem. However, this isn't exactly ideal for players who prefer the portability of the Nintendo Switch. If you fall into the latter category, you will have to get used to setting your tiny Switch screen down on a table or desk while playing the minigame collection. It's not the worst thing ever, but this could be a big caveat for some fans.

Additionally, WarioWare: Move It also has some rather unique requirements that players must fulfill to get through certain minigames in the collection. In the "Trust Tether Sign" pose, you must have the wristband cable attached to your Joy-Con. This is because the microgame has you dropping your Joy-Con in the air and dangling it. If you don't have the strap, you can theoretically get around this by dropping your controllers on a chair or couch. But from my experience, the game often doesn't these movements correctly using this method, so you really need to have the accessory.

Once you get past those hurdles, WarioWare: Move It is an absolute blast! After winning an all-expenses paid trip to Caresaway Island, Wario begrudgingly invites all of his friends from previous games to a vacation resort. In many ways, WarioWare: Move It plays like a love letter to the niche franchise. Fans of the series will feel right at home as beloved characters such as Mona, Ashley, Crygor, and Penny are all here and incorporated into the story in a really neat way.

For its core gameplay loop, WarioWare: Move It has you navigating around the Caresaway Island map as you unlock new chapters in the story. However, each level is centered around a specific character's point of view as we get to see how they are spending their time at the vacation resort. In every chapter, you are thrown into a series of quick minigames that you must complete to reach the final Boss Stage.

For example, the first level has you taking on Wario, who is being chased through the jungle. As you watch the Nintendo mascot sprint for his life, the game quickly cuts to minigames that range from chopping carrots in a kitchen to playing whack-a-mole with a giant octopus. Because I am a clumsy person, I accidentally threw orange juice into a character's face instead of gently clinking their wine glass in one of the challenges. Oops! If you use up your lives and fail the game, no worries, as WarioWare: Move It! gives you an infinite amount of continues, as long as you are willing to swallow your pride and re-create a goofy "sacred pose" with your Joy-Cons.

Another stage had me ing Mona, who was on a Mermaid Meet and Greet adventure. In each level, the game introduces you to new poses you have to mimic with your Joy-Cons to progress the story. For Mona's segment, I had to hit a baseball, keep my character dry with an umbrella, and use a plunger to get a turtle out of a clogged toilet. Yes, the game gets weird quickly. In the opening stages alone, I had to "de-stock" a character by pulling the stretched garment off her face. Why? Who knows! But it's these bizarre moments that make WarioWare: Move It a joy to play. While it lacks the strategic elements of board games like Mario Party, its frantic and unexpected gameplay is constantly stimulating. I couldn't stop laughing when one of the challenges literally had me creating a Snowman with my butt. Yeah, don't ask.

WarioWare: Move It has two core modes: Story and Party. In Story Mode, you and another player move up and down Caresaway Island, tackling each level's minigame-filled story segment. The campaign can also be played solo. Party Mode, in comparison, gets straight to the action and is just a collection of minigames that up to 4 players can jump into. In this mode, you will not have to watch lengthy cutscenes or deal with the resort story.

While it's to be expected from the series by this point, I was surprised at how tired I got while playing WarioWare: Move It. The game lives up to its name, as it really expects you to use your entire body while utilizing your full surroundings. In one minigame, I almost fell down on the ground after bending backward so my on-screen character would fit under the game's limbo bar. Players with mobility issues may struggle with certain aspects of WarioWare: Move It!, as there are almost no compromises regarding the physical requirements of each minigame.

WarioWare: Move It is an absolute blast to play and is the perfect mix of chaotic gameplay and bizarre humor. However, the game's heavy reliance on motion controls and strict minigame requirements may be a dealbreaker for some players. Ultimately, Nintendo's decision to go all in on the Joy-Con mostly pays off as WarioWare: Move It has some of the series' most innovative and bizarre minigames to date. If you can get past the hurdles, this is one of the best party titles on the Nintendo Switch and is a perfect love letter to the long-running franchise.
