Square Enix Vocal Covers: Timeless Classics, a new cover album from Square Enix and Keiichi Okabe’s MONACA, will feature songs from NieR, NieR: Automata, Final Fantasy IX, FFX, and FFXIII. It will launch in Japan on June 25, 2025, with European and US debuts following in July 2025. It will cost $26.99/€19.99 and feature six versions of five songs.

It sounds like all six songs will be performed by the same singer, with two of them being English covers and the other four being in Japanese. Square Enix didn’t reveal their identity yet though. It did share the track list, which consists of two versions of “Melodies of Life” alongside the other four performances.

Here’s the full list of songs:

  1. “Weight of the World” English Version from NieR: Automata
  2. “Kaine / Salvation” from NieR Replicant and Gestalt
  3. “Suteki Da Ne” from Final Fantasy X
  4. “The Sunleth Waterscape” from Final Fantasy XIII
  5. “Melodies of Life” English Version from Final Fantasy IX
  6. “Melodies of Life” from Final Fantasy IX

Square Enix also started to share samples of the Square Enix Vocal Covers: Timeless Classics songs ahead of the album’s launch. It started with the first song on the album, which is the English version of “Weight of the World” from NieR: Automata.

The second sample to appear showed off “Kaine / Salvation” from NieR Replicant and Gestalt.

The last one Square Enix shared is “The Sunleth Waterscape” from Final Fantasy XIII

The Kingdom Hearts series started out as essentially Disney meets Final Fantasy. This is seen even in the fact that several Final Fantasy characters from different iterations of the franchise appear in the various games. Here are the most notable and best Final Fantasy characters to appear in the Kingdom Hearts games.

Best Kingdom Hearts Final Fantasy Characters: Cloud (Final Fantasy VII) 386sw

The brooding Cloud Strife is one of the first Final Fantasy characters players meet in Kingdom Hearts. He is also perhaps the most prolific, featuring in four of the titles in some direct way. This leads to an entire story arc revolving around Cloud, his training in the Colosseum, and his journey to defeat his nemesis Sephiroth.

Tidus (Final Fantasy X) 1u386g

Tidus is one of the childhood friends of Sora and Riku. Despite being from Final Fantasy X, he somehow appears on the Destiny Islands in this series in a younger version of himself. There is a lot to love about the goofy and awkward protagonist, especially as he acts as a fun tutorial for Sora.

Selphie (Final Fantasy VIII) 2q2w2l

Selphie is one of the other of the crossover trio that grows up on the Destiny Islands alongside Sora and Riku. She is perhaps even more notable, though, since she comes from a different game entirely — Final Fantasy VIII — and her lovable outgoing personality shines through. She even gets a significant enough story arc later in the series as a classmate of Kairi’s.

Sephiroth (Final Fantasy VII) 6f6c8

The infamous villain of Final Fantasy VII, Sephiroth, is even a boss for Sora to fight in this series. Sephiroth is one of the most challenging foes in both the original Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts 2. He will truly challenge your knowledge of the game and every mechanic. Plus, prior to Final Fantasy VII Remake, this was one of his best graphical appearances.

Moogles 4f3a43

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the lovable mascots of the Final Fantasy series: the Moogles. Sure, they aren’t as flashy as the other characters on this list. However, they make up for this with being in every single game. In fact, they have the notable role of being the shopkeepers in most titles. This means they are actively involved in the player’s story in every game, being far more essential than most crossover characters.

Crisis Core FFVII Final Fantasy X Blitzball easter egg

Square Enix recently shared new information about a Final Fantasy X Blitzball Easter egg included in Crisis Core: FFVII Reunion and its original release. It involves various Gun Bull Head robot enemies in Crisis Core: FFVII being named after Final Fantasy X Blitzball players. These enemies can be found during the sniper minigame in Chapter 9.

The original Japanese tweet shared by the FFVII Remake Twitter reads as follows:

“Surely many of you have recognized before the names of the Gun Bull Heads during the sniping section in Nibel Plains.

Several of them are named after Blitzball players in FFX!

Today (July 19) is the day that #FF10 was released back in 2001!

Congratulations!”

You can also check out the original tweet talking about the Crisis Core FFVII FFX Easter egg here:

https://twitter.com/FFVIIR_CLOUD/status/1681499109247647744

The sniper minigame occurs during Chapter 9 on the Nibel Plains, and shortly after the Nibelheim escape section of the game. In it, Zack has to defeat several Gun Bull Head robots before they flee and alert Shinra troops. While the tweet shared the Japanese names of the Gun Bull Heads, the localized English names of the robots coincide with the names of the Blitzball players in FFX.

The previous Crisis Core: FFVII bit of information shared by Square Enix relates to the Turks, and their tasks within Shinra.

Crisis Core: FFVII Reunion is immediately available for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC.

You can also check out the original tweet talking about the Crisis Core FFVII FFX Easter egg here: https://twitter.com/FFVIIR_CLOUD/status/1681499109247647744 The sniper minigame occurs during Chapter 9 on the Nibel Plains, and shortly after the Nibelheim escape section of the game.

Final Fantasy X Eternal Calm Beach

The Eternal Calm is an important event in Final Fantasy X. However, in order to understand what The Eternal Calm is, it’s important to understand Spira, the world that the game is set in.

The world of Final Fantasy X is marked by tragedy. This is because of Sin, a gigantic whale-like creature capable of leveling cities and wiping out entire armies. Society in Spira must constantly rebuild itself in the wake of Sin’s attacks. Meanwhile the people live in desperate hope that if they follow the religious teachings of Yevon, they will be spared from Sin’s wrath.

Sin can be defeated. Summoners from around Spira go on pilgrimages to gain Aeons, powerful creatures who can be called into battle. At the end of their journey, they get to summon the Final Aeon, a being powerful enough to take down Sin. This victory over Sin leads to the Calm.

The Calm is a respite from the devastation caused by Sin. With Sin gone, the people of Spira can live peacefully knowing their home isn’t about to be obliterated at any moment. However, the Calm is temporary, as Sin always returns after a few years. It’s an endless cycle that Spira is trapped in.

Final Fantasy X Eternal Calm Sin

In Final Fantasy X, Yuna is one of the summoners who sets out on her pilgrimage to defeat Sin. She is ed by her Guardians, including the game’s protagonist, Tidus. During their journey, they learn many of the truths behind Yu Yevon and Sin and make a choice to end the cycle for good. They find a way to defeat Sin that leads to its permanent destruction.

This is where the Eternal Calm comes in. As with all victories against Sin, Spira enters The Calm. However, due to Yuna and her friends, Sin has no chance of returning, turning this into an Eternal Calm. In addition, Yuna’s actions have exposed the lies and corruption within Yevon, and the religious order collapses. With both of these changes, the Eternal Calm represents a new start for Spira and its people.

We don’t see much of the Eternal Calm in Final Fantasy X itself. Instead, its impact is seen in the direct sequel, Final Fantasy X-2, which wastes no time in showing how different the world is following the start of the Eternal Calm.

Final Fantasy X-2 Eternal Calm Yuna Concert

Many have derided the pop concert at the start of Final Fantasy X-2. It’s campy and over the top. It’s a drastic contrast to the somber ending of Final Fantasy X. However, this is the point. It’s a blunt way of showing it, but this scene is an illustration of why the Eternal Calm matters.

In Final Fantasy X, Spira was caught in the grip of a strict religious order and living in fear of Sin. The only levity the people were allowed was Blitzball. In Final Fantasy X-2, the Eternal Calm allows the people of Spira to live how they choose. And they choose to go to pop concerts, play coin games and form teams of treasure hunters with Charlie’s Angels style group poses. It’s all a little silly, but Spira in Final Fantasy X was a world in desperate need of some silliness.

The Eternal Calm is important to the story of Final Fantasy X because its arrival makes all the sacrifices of Yuna's journey worth it. After her long and arduous pilgrimage, this is what she has gained for both herself and the population of Spira. A thousand years of oppression are over, and now everyone can play Sphere Break. It's the happy ending Spira deserves.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster is available now for PS4, PC, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One.

kabuki final fantasy x

Nomura Tetsuya, the original character designer for Final Fantasy X, drew new art of everyone for the kabuki stage play. As a reminder, the kabuki stage play for Final Fantasy X will run from March 4 to April 12, 2023 in Tokyo, Japan. So far we can see art of TIdus, but Nomura has drawn all of the party in their kabuki outfits. [Thanks, Game Watch!]

[gallery columns="1" ids="952884" link="file"]

When you go to watch the kabuki stage play, the art of the seven party will be projected upon a 8-meter screen. It will show up before each parts; there is an intermission before the first half and the second half of the kabuki stage play. It will also be on the pamphlet, so you can look it over at your leisure. Outfits for all of the characters have a distinctly Japanese aesthetic in its reimagining to match with the kabuki format.

As mentioned before, the stage play covers the entire game so it is quite long. So there are two parts to the play, making it possible to purchase tickets for only half the show if your schedule can’t make the whole thing. The first half ends after the party finds out Seymour is an enemy. The second half starts from the group’s infiltration into Bevelle.

The Final Fantasy X kabuki stage play will run from March 4 to April 12, 2023 in Japan. You can purchase tickets for it here.

  • Auron: Nakamura Shido
  • Braska: Nakamura Kinnosuke
  • Cid: Nakamura  Karoku
  • Jecht: Bando Yajuro
  • Kimahri: Bando Hikosaburo
  • Lulu: Nakamura Baishi
  • Luzzu: Nakamura Mantaro
  • Rikku: Kamimura Kichitaro
  • Seymour: Onoe Matsuya
  • Tidus: Onoe Kikunosuke
  • Tidus (Young): Onoe Ushinosuke
  • Wakka: Nakamura Hashinosuke
  • Yuna: Nakamura Yonekichi
  • Yunalesca: Nakamura Shinobu
As a reminder, Nakamura Karoku, Nakamura Kinnosuke, and Onoe Ushinosuke will only appear in the second half. Both the characters’ outfits and the music have had rearrangements to them to fit the kabuki aesthetic. This generally means that there is a more traditional Japanese feel to them. You could hear that in the Sending video as well. The Final Fantasy X kabuki stage play will take place in Japan from March 4 to April 12, 2023.

final fantasy x kabuki

It’s not Obon season just yet, but restless spirits will get an early Sending. A kabuki stage play of Final Fantasy X will take place in Spring 2023. You will be able to watch it from March 4, 2023 to April 12, 2023 at IHI Stage Around Tokyo. It will have 35 shows during that period. There is a teaser video for it, in which the actor for Yuna performs a Sending. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

Renowned kabuki actor Nakamura Yonekichi V will play Yuna in the kabuki show. Holographic Pyreflies appear on stage in the video as well. Unlike the soundtrack in Final Fantasy X, there is a distinctly Japanese feel to this arrangement due to the usage of traditional Japanese instruments. The music director who arranged it, as well as Nakamura Yonekichi V, previously worked on the Nausicaa kabuki stage play.

You can watch the Final Fantasy X kabuki Sending here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quH6v75QsX8&

The first half starts at 12 PM and the second half starts at 5:30 PM. Nakamura Karoku V, Nakamura Kinnosuke, and Onoe Ushinosuke will only appear in the second half. The most ticket will cost 32,000 JPY (with the cheapest being 19,800 JPY) if you want to watch both parts. The SS and S tickets will also include an exclusive acrylic stand. However, if you only want to watch either the first or second half, tickets start from 11,000 JPY. Note that if you buy tickets for only half of the show, then you cannot get the acrylic stand.

The Final Fantasy X kabuki show will be available at IHI Stage Around Tokyo from March 4 to April 2023.

Final Fantasy mouse mat

The Square Enix Store debuted a new series of Final Fantasy mouse pads and mats for fans to protect their desks and computer mice with. Pre-orders are open, with an estimated delivery date of March 25, 2023.

The Final Fantasy mouse pad mats measure 800mm wide (about 31.5 inches) and 400mm long (about 15 inches). They'll cover most of a typical computer work surface, with enough space for a keyboard and mouse, or a laptop and other peripherals. They're designed to provide a surface for a mouse to glide smoothly, without scratching the desk or the device.

The mats also feature art from several Final Fantasy titles. Six are available, with illustrations from the following FF games:

  • Final Fantasy VIII
  • Final Fantasy IX
  • Final Fantasy X
  • Final Fantasy XII
  • Final Fantasy XIII
  • Final Fantasy XV

The art emblazoned on the Final Fantasy mouse mats reflects promotional art used for the titles. For example, the FFVIII mat shows an image of Rinoa rendered in the style of the game's CG cutscenes, with Squall and Seifer behind her. The FFX mouse mat features a scene of Yuna and Tidus sharing a moment in the water. The FFXIII mat shows Lightning riding Odin in Gestalt mode. The FFXV mat shows a picture of Noctis and Lunafreya.

Two other Final Fantasy mats show off 2D artwork instead of the 3D images. The FFXII mat shows off Yoshitaka Amano-drawn concept art of the Archadian Judges Gabranth, Drace, Ghis, Bergan, and Zargabaath. The FFIX mat centers an illustration of Freya and Vivi.

Each Final Fantasy mouse mat pad costs about 3,300 Yen (about $25 USD). The games are available on various systems, including PS2, PS3, PS4, PC, and Nintendo Switch.

Emet-Selch

Japanese video sharing site NicoNico held a popularity poll to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the Final Fantasy series. The poll asked Japanese fans their favorite FF title, favorite music track from the series, and their favorite character. The results were topped by FFXIV, "To Zanarkand," and Emet-Selch.

The total sample size for the NicoNico Final Fantasy poll was about 11,169 votes. Almost all the top three spots in each category were held by entries from Final Fantasy XIV, Final Fantasy X, and Final Fantasy VII. For example, the top three most-popular characters were Emet-Selch, Wakka, and Cloud Strife. Emet-Selch is one of the Ascians, a group of major antagonists from throughout FFXIV's main story. He was also the central villain of the Shadowbringers expansion. He is voiced in Japanese by Hiroki Takahashi (Keith Kepler in Spy x Family, Ryu in Street Fighter V) and in English by René Zagger.

The only exception to the trend was Final Fantasy V, which broke into the top three in the "Favorite Music Track" category. The top three songs were FFX's main theme, "To Zanarkand", FFV's "Battle on the Big Bridge," and FFXIV's "A Long Fall" (also known as "The Twinning").
