Now that Yen Press’ run of the CLAMP Collection Tokyo Babylon manga is done, we once again get to see what happened to Subaru and Hokuto Sumeragi and Seishirou Sakurazuka. After all, volume 7 is dedicated completely to the major reveals and

Throughout Tokyo Babylon, CLAMP keeps hinting at things not being exactly right. Seishirou engages in suspicious behavior that proves he not only has his own supernatural abilities and awareness, but may be an onmyouji on par with Subaru. Subaru constantly wears gloves he never takes off. There are times when we’ll see him think back to a childhood memory with a mysterious person. Hokuto seems especially aware of something to do with Seishirou, yet pushes him and her brother together. Once we start to get into later volumes, Seishirou’s activities become more blatant, and we start hearing about the Sakura Zukamori assassin. 

So Tokyo Babylon volume 7 is completely dedicated to giving us answers, yet with the ending also leaving us completely lost with new questions. The bet between Seishirou and Subaru? It’s completely revealed. Seishirou met Subaru when both of them were young and Subaru saw him committing one of his assassinations. Seishirou marked the boy as a possible victim, saying once they’d meet again that Subaru would have one year to get him to fall in love with him. If he failed, Seishirou would kill him. If he succeeded, he’d get to live. But Seishirou claims he failed, and we’re confronted with a scene that’s blatant torture. 

Considering the violence we’ve seen throughout Tokyo Babylon, which affected both Subaru and Seishirou in the past, this in itself isn’t shocking. Especially paired with CLAMP being realistic and showing the effect of this latest encounter on Subaru after the fact. He’s comatose. Completely broken. His mind and body is devastated after Seishirou completely revealed who he is. There’s no immediate recovery. We witness exactly how brutal it all was. 

These moments before the end also provide an opportunity for us to see the healthier loving relationships around Subaru. We know at this point that, age difference not withstanding, the primary pairing here is extremely toxic. But Subaru is initially saved because of an act of love and sacrifice by his grandmother. She resorted to extreme lengths to snatch him away from Seishirou, paying a price in the process. Then Hokuto, his twin sister, sets out as a secondary sacrifice to assure his safety after the previous encounter that left him broken. 

But more importantly, we don’t get to know what’s next. We only know what happened to Hokuto because of CLAMP’s narrative and Subaru’s ability. We don’t see him meet Seishirou again in the ending of volume 7 of the Tokyo Babylon manga. We don’t see the inevitable weeks and months it takes him to recover. We even don’t see him pick up the pieces. We only see him end up assisting on a final “case” to show that even after everything that happened, he’s still using his onmyouji abilities to help others.

I also think the fact that X/1999 remains unfinished helps the Tokyo Babylon ending stand out even further at this point. CLAMP got to offer us some resolution. Further confrontations between Subaru and Seishiro appear, as they meet again. Hokuto is referenced, and we get closure regarding that spell only she could use. But at the same time, we don’t get to know what becomes of Subaru. He still doesn’t get an ending.

The Tokyo Babylon ending still hits me every time I read it, even years later. There’s no mercy in this final volume. CLAMP set up a tragedy, leaving little clues along the way. Some more obvious than others, of course. There’s no closure here. No happy ending. Just like real life, things don’t come together perfectly. Instead, we see how different choices we’ve made and people we let in permanently affect our lives even after a short time together. And, because the follow-up work remains unfinished, we just never get to really know what happened to Subaru at the end.

It’s taken 10 years, but Good Smile Company announced it will finally release a new Cardcaptor Sakura Tomoyo Daidouji Nendoroid. This latest figure isn’t an update of the original, as it depicts an older version of the character from the Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card anime. It will cost ￥6,800 when it debuts in November 2025 in Japan, and it will be $44.99 when it launches in the US in Q2 2026.

Since this is an older version of Tomoyo, she wears her Tomoeda Junior High uniform for the figure. In the original, she wore the elementary branch’s, which featured a simpler white skirt and a hat. She comes with an updated video camera accessory and a phone, both for taking pictures and footage of Sakura. Her school bag can be held in her right hand too. She comes with a neutral smiling face plate, one in which she’s extra happy, and a new take on the "Sakura-chan is incredibly cute" expression. (The original Nendoroid featured a similar one with stars in her eyes.

Just like the first Nendoroid, there is a Good Smile Company Online Shop bonus. The initial one came with a Kero-chan figure. This one comes with extra hand parts for an additional pose, which you can see below:

This figure is designed to match another recent Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card Nendoroid. One of Sakura Kinomoto appeared in 2024. Her and Tomoyo’s uniforms will match. This could mean that, if you own both, you could swap their hand, arm, and leg parts for more potential poses.

The Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card Tomoyo Daidouji Nendoroid will debut in Japan in November 2025 and worldwide in Q2 2026. Pre-orders are open until July 9, 2025. The anime is streaming on Crunchyroll.

Good Smile Company teased a new image of an Cardcaptor Sakura figure of Sakura Kinomoto in her iconic black and pink cat maid battle costume on social media. This will be a part of the Pop Up Parade line and will be one of the Ver L larger size models. There’s no expected release window yet, but pre-orders for it will start in May 2025. 

While the Cardcaptor Sakura figure is unpainted at the moment, we can still tell exactly what battle costume Sakura is wearing in it. The cat maid outfit is rendered exactly, right down to the bell on the collar, apron, and cat ears and tail on her head and back. She’s also wielding her Clow-style Sealing Wand, which appeared in the earliest part of the series. (In later arcs, its appearance changed.) 

Here’s the first image showing how she looks. As this is still early in development, we only get to see her from one angle.

As a reminder, the black cat maid is one of the older Cardcaptor Sakura battle costumes. Tomoyo Daidouji made it for her to wear when she was capturing the Thunder Card during the series. In the past, Good Smile Company made a Nendoroid Co-de figure of her in it. As it was part of the Co-de line, there were no extra accessories or elements, like with typical Nendoroids.

Since this is a Pop Up Parade figure, there will be no additional face plates or parts. Since it’s a part of the Ver L line, that could mean she’ll stand at about 240mm, like the recent Atelier Ryza one. 

The Cardcaptor Sakura Pop Up Parade L Ver figure is in development, with pre-orders opening worldwide in May 2025. Kodansha handles the manga worldwide. The anime is streaming on Crunchyroll.

More Cardcaptor Sakura Nendoroids that aren’t just variants of Sakura Kinomoto are coming, and the next two figures will be Toya Kinomoto and Yukito Tsukishiro. Both are based on their appearances as of the Clear Card anime and mangasequel series. These two are early in development. As such, only concept art of the two in Nendoroid form showed up in the showcase.

As the name suggests, Toya Kinomoto is Sakura’s older brother in the series. For the sake of avoiding spoilers, Yukito is his classmate, and the two are extremely close. When the series begins, both attend Seijyo High School. As such, their Nendoroids will feature them in those uniforms. There are no hints about possible accessories for either one.

This is the first time either of these two characters appeared in the Nendoroid line of Cardcaptor Sakura figures. However, in the past we’ve seen various versions of Sakura Kinomoto, both in her costumes and her school uniform. Years ago, Nendoroids of Tomoyo Daidouji in her Tomoeda Elementary School school unform and Syaoran Li in his uniform for using magic appeared. One of the other more recent releases is a Nendoroid of Yue, which is available now.

CLAMP announced that the xxxHolic Rei manga will resume serialization in the 21st issue of Young Magazine. It’ll come out on April 21, 2025. [Thanks, Oricon!]

xxxHolic Rei is the second series, and it serves as a sequel to the original xxxHolic. It started serialization in 2013, though there are only less than 60 chapters as of the time of writing. This is due to multiple hiatuses throughout the series. Volume 4, the newest volume in the series, came out in Japan in 2016.

The first xxxHolic manga series ran from 2003 to 2011, with a total of 19 volumes in the manga. It focuses on Kimihiro Watanuki, a high schooler who can perceive the supernatural. Upon meeting a mysterious witch and shopkeeper, Yuko Ichihara, he asks for her to remove his ability to see spirits. She agrees, but in exchange for her help, he needs to work for her. The manga was very popular. Despite the lack of updates in the series proper, there was even a xxxHolic collaboration event in Identity V in 2023.

CLAMP is an influential manga artist group, known for multiple popular manga series and its work on character designs. Past works from CLAMP include Cardcaptor Sakura, Magic Knight Rayearth, and Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle. An exhibition for CLAMP’s works will appear in Japan in February 2025.

xxxHolic Rei will resume serialization from April 21, 2025.

The CLAMP exhibition will return to Japan starting on February 27, 2025, and it will then run until March 31, 2025. The lottery for tickets will open on January 8, 2025.

This year, you’ll be able to see the CLAMP exhibition on the 9th floor of the Fukuoka Mitsukoshi. Tickets cost 1600 JPY ($10.15) for adults, and you’ll have until January 13, 2025 to put your name into the lottery. These tickets are for specific times and dates. If you want to, you can also purchase tickets the day you go to the exhibition. However, tickets will cost 1800 JPY ($11.40) instead.

The last time CLAMP held an exhibition in Japan, it ran from July to September 2024 in Roppongi, Tokyo. The Fukuoka exhibition will have over 200 works in color, and over 350 in black-and-white. You’ll be able to see s from the manga, key visuals that appeared in magazines or promotional material, and more.

As for CLAMP, it is a manga artist group that debuted in 1987. It produced many iconic works such as Magic Knight Rayearth, Cardcaptor Sakura, xxxHolic, and Chobits. Aside from writing manga, CLAMP also does work like character design. Some anime it designed for include Code Geass, Blood-C, and Vanguard overDress.

The CLAMP exhibition will appear in Fukuoka from February 27 to March 31, 2025.

Not long after Yen Press started rereleasing the Tokyo Babylon manga as part of the CLAMP Collection, I brought up how the series still feels fresh despite its age due to the timeless nature of its scenarios. The thing is, this isn’t just a fleeting thing where, after reading volume 1 again, you realize how spot-on CLAMP was when incorporating societal concerns into the story. With volume 5, it once again hammers home from the very start that history repeats, we’re always going to experience certain concerns like debt and fleeting dreams of home ownership, and we need to be extremely careful when handling those sorts of stressors.

So right away, Tokyo Babylon’s “Old” story hit me like a ton of bricks when I started it. Keep in mind, I did read this CLAMP manga years ago. But certain situations when Subaru is dealing with essentially a “monster of the week” can sometimes blend together or fade away when ing the more broad plot points. But upon revisiting it, there’s so much going on when it comes to issues in society caused by things like housing bubbles, inflation, and other economic issues.

Like many Tokyo Babylon stories that focus on Subaru meeting and assisting people with a situation, he takes more of a backseat and often feels more like a ing cast member than the star. Instead, the focus is on a struggling family. They’re living in the city in a small, cramped house. Though the husband works full-time and the wife has a part-time job, they’re barely getting by. Their two children are getting older, which means both are more expensive. The couple are also ing the wife’s father, who is retired and doesn’t have any income of his own. There’s constant shouting. Money is tight. It’s something that, given the struggles after the COVID-19 pandemic started in late 2019, any of us could be experiencing now. 

We even hear about the consequences of other people dealing with that kind of debt and pressure. Subaru’s introduction involves him being called by a real estate company to come in and cleanse a house. A family referenced in the introduction committed suicide due to mounting debts, with a couple and their young daughter being the victims. The head of the company even brings up how he can’t understand how unaffordable things became, and cites how it’s just impossible for people to own homes in Tokyo. That places that do end up being found are overcrowded and overpriced, and many are driven out to equally expensive suburbs and forced to commute.

Now, keep in mind, at this point Tokyo Babylon is over 20 years old. The situations CLAMP reference in the manga are still so applicable, and even more true. Leading into the story of Subaru’s encounter with the grandfather of the family in the introduction, a former Ueno zookeeper, and learning about his life becomes even more poignant. We’re experiencing this still, 20 years later. Things haven’t changed. They aren’t getting better. Stress is still driving people to abuse ones they love, to illness, and to death. 

I’m not going to spoil what happens in “Old” in Tokyo Babylon, but it continues to be a storyline that leaves a strong impression. Especially given how we’re seeing history repeat 20 years later and people now, in 2024, in similar situations. Again, I don’t know how many times I can say it, but CLAMP really crafted a manga that sticks with you and keeps remaining topical with Tokyo Babylon, and it makes it a joy to reread.

Mayla announced a line of perfumes based on Cardcaptor Sakura. Each perfume comes in a unique bottle that uses bows from Sakura’s various outfits, as well as the top part of her Star Wand.

Each of the Cardcaptor Sakura perfumes costs 11,880 JPY, which converts to approximately $79.40. While the company does offer international shipping, you might need to check customs rules to see if it can ship the perfumes to you. Some countries restrict the import of perfumes due to them containing alcohol. However, the ingredients list for the Mayla fragrances don't appear to have anything with alcohol content.

Here are the colors and scents of the different Cardcaptor Sakura perfumes Mayla offers:

• Candy Lotus
  Yellow. Contains apple and orange top notes, fruity (cassis, strawberry, and peach) heart notes, and vanilla base notes.
• Clear
  Light blue. Contains marine and citrus top notes, floral (rose, lily, lavender) heart notes, and musky (sandalwood, dry amber) base notes.
• Eternal Girly
  Light pink. Very simple perfume containing green top notes, muguet (lily) heart notes, and musky base notes.
• Rocket Beat
  Dark pink/light purple. Contains marine top notes, floral (rose and lilac) heart notes, and fruity (peach and jasmine) base notes.

This isn’t the first time Mayla sold items based on Cardcaptor Sakura. In October 2024, it announced a line of lounge wear that resembles her school uniform. However, pre-orders for these items ended in early November 2024.

A huge plush of Mokona from Magical Knight Rayearth is a winnable prize in the Namco online crane game machine. The plush appeared on November 14, 2024.

In of size, the huge Magical Knight Rayearth Mokona plush is around 28 centimeters tall and 40 centimeters wide. It’s pretty big so you can put it on your couch as a cushion and it wouldn’t look too out of place. The Mokona doll has the character’s usual little smile and because it’s sitting down, you can see the paw pads (for lack of a better term) on the bottom of its feet.

While Bandai Namco did not mention anything in its announcement Tweet for the Mokona plush, the appearance of the mascot may have to do with the series’s 30th anniversary. News of a new anime appeared in July 2024, along with a key visual and a trailer. You can watch the trailer here:

While the character of Mokona is exclusive to Magical Knight Rayearth, the design of the creature has appeared in other CLAMP works. There are two Mokona Modoki creatures in xxxHolic, for example. While they have actual names, other character just refer to them as Mokona.

The huge Mokona plush is available in Namco crane games in Japan.

Bandai has revealed that it will produce and sell replicas of the Sealing Wand from Cardcaptor Sakura. The replica will be part of the Special Memorize brand, and it will be available in March 2025.

The company will use the bird head-like Clow Form as the basis for this Sealing Wand replica. The wand will have a total length of around 61 cm (~24 inches).

Pre-orders for the replica have opened on the Japanese Bandai website with a price tag of 7,480 yen (~$50.45). Bandai also teased on its Japanese press release that it may sell the replicas outside Japan as well.

This new replica will appear as part of celebrations for the 25th anniversary of Cardcaptor Sakura's anime adaptation. Bandai had previously revealed that it will hold an Ichiban Kuji merchandise lottery based on the franchise in mid-October 2024. Meanwhile, Good Smile Company is gradually releasing new figures of Sakura Kinomoto and Tomoyo Daidouji across the world.

The Special Memorize replica of the Sealing Wand from Cardcaptor Sakura will be formally available in March 2025. Bandai will close the pre-order window for the item on November 27, 2024.

In the early volumes of the Tokyo Babylon manga, CLAMP is pretty tactful about Seishirou Sakurazuka. We get hints that there is more to him than there appears. These grow more obvious, until there are substantial actions like the one in the third volume. With the newly rereleased volume four of Tokyo Babylon, it’s much more clear what Seishirou is capable of and what this means for Subaru Sumeragi.

Throughout much of the Tokyo Babylon manga up to this point, Seishirou largely seemed a potential force for good. Yes, he’s hiding something. We definitely are aware of his own powers and strengths. But he’s still maintaining his identity as a veterinarian, is being kind toward both Subaru and Hokuto, and seems to adore Subaru. When he’s acted in past volumes, it’s been to assist in some way. With this latest entry, we’re getting more insights into what we should really expect from him. Plus, it’s handled in such a way that we’re forced to compare his still considerate actions with more ominous ones.

Things begin with the “Crime” case. After seeing a shrine torn down, we begin with Subaru ruminating about it with Hokuto and Seishirou about what it means when a seal like that is removed. It’s honestly a sweet sort of moment, even though repercussions are being considered. Because we have Seishirou providing food and offering to make a meal later for the young onmyoji. And it keeps seeming like a positive series of interaction when Subaru shows up at Seishirou’s door after a very rough day. The one encourages the other. Has food for him. Reassures him. 

But it’s at the end of this first chapter of volume 4 of the Tokyo Babylon manga that we start to get real, substantial proof that things are not good. After Seishirou puts an exhausted and depressed Subaru to bed, he promises to protect him and stay by his side. Subaru thanks him. When Seishirou leaves, he looks in a mirror that cracks and ominously suggests he’ll win the “bet” the two made. While the early parts of the next case, called “Save,” begin with Hokuto seemingly encouraging Subaru’s relationship with Seishirou while also questioning if the older man is as kind as he seems. 

This foreshadowing continues with a meeting between Subaru and his grandmother. In addition to tasking him with investigating the Ms Institute, she shares with him a warning about being swept away by the cherry blossoms. Seishirou’s name and the mysterious Sakurazukamori assassin’s aside, it seems further uncertain. CLAMP leaves us in the dark a little yet again, even though there’s more further movement on Hokuto’s part. 

It’s the end of volume 4 of the Tokyo Babylon manga that shows how well that Seishirou pacing paid off. Everything leading up to the end of the “Save” storyline is preparing us for what we learn as it draws to a close. The future for everyone is still uncertain, of course. But there is so much new insight into Seishirou here and pay off that it feels quite satisfying.

In early Tokyo Babylon manga volumes, we get a good balance of seeing Subaru Sumeragi at work in various situations, but we don’t get to see as much of Seishirou Sakurazuka. However, in the third volume, the storyline focuses entirely on a single, harrowing case. As a result, we get to see more of what sets Subaru apart, as well as a hint at Seishirouo’s true power.

Editor’s Note: There will be some mild spoilers for the setup of volume 3 of the Tokyo Babylon manga, but the conclusion and major spoilers aren’t discussed. 4h155r

Volume 3 of the Tokyo Babylon manga consists of two parts of the same story: “Call A” and “Call B.” It’s a continuing case in which three women calling in on a specific Dial Q Party Line, determining themselves to be warriors protecting against the end of the world by using magic against “bases” at phone numbers ending in 19■9. (Yes, it’s 100% referencing X/1999.) However, these are complete amateurs with no awareness of what sutras and the supernatural can actually do. So they’re causing tremendous damage to the people at those locations, as well as backlash to themselves that actual practitioners like Subaru are aware of. The storyline involves the tracking down of the trio and handling of the situation.

A great part of both “Call A” and “Call B” is that we’re seeing all sides of Subaru as an onmyoji. There’s the investigation portion, which involves him using actual detective-style footwork and his supernatural skills. Then, there’s the execution of handling the curses and spells the inexperienced practitioners are weaving. We are seeing him both informally and formally handling things in one of the most substantial and life-threatening situation so far, and it’s handled so well throughout both parts of this case.

What’s really important is the part Seishirou plays in Tokyo Babylon volume 3 and how it hints at his relationship to and power compared to Subaru. CLAMP did a great job of leading up to the reveals surrounding him. We have a general idea in the first two volumes. There are suggestions he possesses a strength that compares to Subaru’s. But it’s in the “Call B” portion that we really get the first real idea of what could be going on. It’s so satisfying, and it also means that the volume really helps make the wait for what happens next in the fourth one harder.

Two things constantly propel Tokyo Babylon forward, and both of them are at the forefront in volume 3 of the manga. One is seeing how Subaru deals supernatural situations. The other is the constantly evolving situation between Subaru and Seishirou. We get both of that here, and in each case the stakes and reveals are even greater than before. It’s a great showcase that helps build the tension on all fronts and leaves the reader wanting more.

Tokyo Babylon volume 3 is available now, and Yen Press will publish volume 4 of the manga on August 20, 2024.

For the 30th anniversary of the Magic Knight Rayearth anime, CLAMP has announced a new series for it. A key visual and railer for it will appear at the CLAMP Exhibition on July 3, 2024.

Even if you can’t go to the CLAMP Exhibition, the Magic Knight Rayearth X (Twitter) will post updates. For reference, the CLAMP Manga Art Exhibition will run from July 3 to September 23, 2024. It’ll feature over 800 pieces of original manga artwork from 23 different series, including Magic Knight Rayearth.

It’s a minute and a half long, starting with a compilation of the original anime, which ran from October 1994 to November 1995. Then, it shows the new iterations of the three main characters: Hikaru Shidou, Umi Ryuuzaki, and Fuu Hououji. The last shot of their backs is also the new visual that the X shared.

Magic Knight Rayearth follows three modern-day Japanese eighth-grade girls who find themselves in the fantasy world of Cephiro. They awaken to magical powers, learn to work together, and become friends during their journey to save Princess Emeraude, who is the Pillar necessary to maintain Cephiro. It originated as a manga and aside from the anime adaptation, there was also an OVA and several video games.

The Bandai Spirits social media revealed the grand prize for the special 25th anniversary Ichiban Kuji lottery for Cardcaptor Sakura. It is a figure of Sakura wearing her outfit from the first opening with Kero next to her.

Sakura’s outfit is one that fan should be familiar with, as she wears it in the first opening. She has a pink-red hat with a ribbon on the back, as well as a matching dress. There are frills underneath the dress, and the sleeves are very puffy. She also has red Mary Janes on. Her Sealing Card and a Clow Card are visible in her hands.

The Cardcaptor Sakura Ichiban Kuji (25th anniversary edition) will appear in stores from mid-October 2024. Like most Ichiban Kuji lotteries, you’ll be able to find them in places like convenience stores and anime goods stores. While we don’t have any pictures of the prizes, we do know what the ones other than the A Prize are. Here is a list of prizes you’ll be able to get from the lottery:

Cardcaptor Sakura started serialization in 1996 and an anime series for it started airing in 1998. It follows the adventures of Saura Kinomoto, a young girl who accidentally unseals and releases the magical Clow Cards from a book she finds. Cerberus, or Kero, is the guardian of said cards and he tasks Sakura with the task of hunting them down and sealing them once again.

The Cardcaptor Sakura 25th anniversary Ichiban Kuji lottery will be available from mid-October 2024 in Japan.

A CLAMP exhibition will take place in Japan from July 3 to September 23, 2024. It’ll cover 23 different series and feature over 800 pieces of the original manga artwork. [Thanks, Oricon!]

News of this exhibition first came out in December 2023. The exhibition will take place at the National Art Center in Roppongi, Tokyo. Some of the series you’ll be able to check out while you’re there include Cardcaptor Sakura, Chobits, Angelic Layer, xxxHolic, and Tokyo Babylon. Artwork will be in both monochrome and color. There will also be exclusive merchandise for the CLAMP exhibition. They are:

• Drip coffee set: 2200 JPY
• Papabubble candy set: 1080 JPY
• Playing cards: 2970 JPY
• Pin set: 8800 JPY
• Mokona commemorative plush: 3300 JPY
• Shopping bag: 550 JPY

All of the merchandise feature either CLAMP characters or the CLAMP logo. 

CLAMP is an all-female manga group that currently consists of four . Aside from the above manga and anime series, it created Magic Knight Rayearth, X, and Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle. There are a variety of different themes and plots for each series, but generally speaking CLAMP’s works feature the idea of fated couples and pure love. The idea of pure love extends beyond gender confines and CLAMP’s series often feature either implied or explicit same-sex couples. There is also the idea of a CLAMP universe in which multiple characters often appear in other works, or look like them.

The CLAMP exhibition will take place in Tokyo from July 2 to September 23, 2024.
